This past Saturday, She Soars and members of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter spent the day at Amicalola Falls with our youth ambassadors from Teens on the Move (TOTM) and other Metro Atlanta teens to unwind and connect with nature.
To kick off the morning, we started with a few stretches to warm up our bodies for the hike, followed by a mindfulness and breathing exercise led by our Lead Youth Ambassador to ground the girls. Our Graduate Intern also held a discussion on what the girls were looking forward to and how they cope with stress. The majority of our youth ambassadors shared that they were looking forward to enjoying a break in their day while enjoying the views. Moreover, many of our girls expressed their common stressors to be social media, college applications, and negative thoughts. Many of our girls also highlighted that activities such as listening to music, getting their hair and nails done, eating yummy food, praying, journaling, and getting sunlight generally helps them cope with stress. We finally ended our discussion to let them know that they deserve to take care of themselves and that rest is vital to show up as our best selves.
We wanted this hike to be an opportunity for the girls to de-stress and remind them that crossing difficult paths can lead to beautiful destinations. Many of our girls took a moment to reflect once at the peak, with some sharing a laugh with friends while others simply took in the view. To celebrate the hike, we ate lunch and shared conversations and laughs over cotton candy, burgers, and fries.
Being part of this beautiful day reminds us how important it is to take time to rejuvenate and appreciate all of our hard work. It can be easy to feel like we need to always be on the go, but it is important to pause, reflect, and acknowledge all of our hard work and accomplishments that have led to this present moment.
We are grateful for our partnership with National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter and working together to improve the health of Black girls.
