This past Friday (June 20th), the She Soars team had a unique opportunity to attend United Way of Greater Atlanta’s 7th Annual African American Partnership Day of Service. The event was hosted by Atlanta Technical College and had STEAM and literacy workshops for middle and high school students.

This opportunity came from a partnership between She Soars Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Keri Hill, who serves as a mentor for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter's Teens On The Move program. The She Soars team served as mentors for the day for the young people who are part of Teens of the Move in addition to their peers from other local organizations.
The first event was a sexual health & HIV/AIDS prevention workshop hosted by Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition (BLACC). BLACC was created to educate and bring awareness to HIV/AIDS prevention methods, as well as bring the African American community together to destigmatize HIV/AIDS.

Students heard about preventative measures the organization is administering, as well as how they can be health advocates. After the session, students participated in a trivia game where they had to answer questions on the workshop content to win prizes.

The second session we attended was about Ransomware attacks and cybersecurity, hosted by Equifax. The students got split up into six groups of four, each group had a Ransomware attack/security breach scenario that the students had to respond to, acting as various company roles. The roles are as follows: CFO, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Public Relations, and Chief Attorney. Each role had different information, which students had to relay to their team. After the workshop, the groups had to present and defend their decisions.

The event culminated in a community lunch and presentation from keynote speaker, Chris James, from Black Boys Better (an organization dedicated to mental health programming for Black boys in Atlanta. The presentation started with two students leading us through a group meditation and visualization activity, then moved into a presentation about the importance of community and taking care of your own mental health.

Thank you, United Way of Greater Atlanta for organizing this amazingly interactive and engaging event. And thank you to the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter Teens on the Move program for your commitment to enhancing the lives of adolescent girls in metropolitan Atlanta.
